How thermal insulation is done right in Kuwait
The right starting point is surveying the existing building to identify where heat actually enters. External walls facing west or south-west receive the harshest radiation in the afternoon, and the flat roof retains heat for hours after sunset. Pinpointing these zones first prevents budget being spent on areas that contribute less to the cooling load and means the insulation strategy addresses the real problem.
Material choice depends on the location and the specific requirement. Spray polyurethane foam suits irregular roof surfaces and delivers insulation and moisture resistance together. XPS board is the right choice under tiles on accessible flat decks because it handles foot traffic and point loads. Reflective coating is added over insulation or used alone where limited intervention is acceptable. Combining two materials on the same project is common when different areas present different conditions.
Quality in application is measured by two things: a continuous insulation layer without interruption at columns, edges and penetrations, and a uniform thickness that matches the design specification. After completion, the work is documented with a compliance certificate recording the materials and thicknesses applied, which is required for formal handovers. Insulation alone does not replace well-sealed double-glazed windows; both together achieve far greater results than either does alone.

Call nowCan thermal insulation be added to an existing building without demolishing the walls?
Yes. Spray foam applied to the exterior surface or boards fixed externally allows insulation to be added without touching the interior walls in most cases. The right method depends on the wall construction and the available access.
Does roof insulation make wall insulation unnecessary?
No. The roof is a major heat source but exposed external walls, especially west and south-facing ones, contribute a significant share too. A complete project addresses both together for the best reduction in cooling load.
What is the practical difference between reflective coating and insulation boards on a roof?
Reflective coating deflects solar radiation before it reaches the slab but provides little resistive insulation value on its own. Boards resist heat transfer through the concrete. Combining both on the same roof delivers the best overall result.
How do I know the insulation was applied at the correct thickness?
During application the foam or board thickness can be measured at multiple points across the surface. On completion, the compliance certificate records the actual materials and thicknesses applied, giving the owner a written reference.
Is thermal insulation suitable for roofs that are walked on?
Yes, when the right material is chosen. XPS boards handle compressive loads and are laid directly under the tile finish. Flexible foam alone is not suitable for trafficked surfaces and should be protected or used where foot traffic is absent.
Does thermal insulation need periodic maintenance?
Properly applied insulation has a long service life without intervention. Periodic inspection of roof edges and areas exposed to moisture is still worthwhile to catch any cracking or delamination early before water tracks under the layer.
