Call nowWhat is the difference between a flat gypsum ceiling and a multi-level gypsum ceiling?
A flat ceiling is one level throughout, with no steps or coves; all effort goes into getting the surface perfectly level and joint-free. Multi-level ceilings include recesses and cornices that partially hide joint imperfections, so a flat ceiling demands more precise taping and feathering work.
How many coats of joint compound does a flat ceiling need before painting?
Three coats are the correct minimum: an embedding coat to set the tape, a fill coat and a thin finish coat, with sanding between each. Two coats leave a visible edge that shows up once the room is lit from the side.
Can recessed lighting be fitted in a flat ceiling without affecting its level finish?
Yes, but cut-outs must be made before the jointing stage so the edges are feathered into the surrounding compound properly. Cutting after finishing breaks the board edge and forces a patch that is very hard to hide.
Is flat gypsum board suitable for kitchens and bathrooms?
Moisture-resistant board must be used in bathrooms and kitchens instead of standard board, and the space must be ventilated. Standard board absorbs steam and will soften, sag and grow mould in a wet environment over time.
Why does a brown or yellow line appear along a joint after painting?
This usually means the compound was not fully dry before painting, or the final coat was too wet. Moisture rises through the paint film and stains it. The repair requires sanding back to the compound, allowing full drying and repainting.
