This means most small residential project foundations rely on surface sand with very high compaction, or dig deeper to reach bedrock. We separate friable sand from rock during excavation, relocate the sand for reuse in backfill and surrounding grading, then compact it in stable layers per building code requirements.

Yes, but it requires very strong compaction in thin layers. We test sand density after compaction to ensure it can bear the building's weight. For very heavy projects we may recommend digging deeper to reach chalk bedrock.
